該劇以1980年代的紐約為背景，講述了一位父親（本尼迪克特·康伯巴奇 Benedict Cumberbatch 飾）絕望地尋找兒子的故事。他九歲的兒子在某天早晨去學(xué)校的途中失蹤了。文森特是紐約著名的木偶藝人之一，還創(chuàng)作了廣受歡迎的兒童電視節(jié)目《Good Day Sunshine》。他努力應(yīng)對失去兒子埃德加的傷痛，變得越來越痛苦和反復(fù)無常。他對埃德加的失蹤充滿了自我厭惡和內(nèi)疚，兒子畫的藍色怪物木偶埃里克成了他的精神寄托。他堅信如果能讓埃里克出現(xiàn)在電視上，埃德加就會回家。文森特的破壞性行為使得他的家人、同事和試圖幫助他的偵探逐漸疏遠(yuǎn)了他，而埃里克成為了他尋找兒子的征途中唯一的盟友。
